Lesson #4 Progress Update with All Star Swimmers of Atlanta @allstarswimATL

lesson 4

We had to take a couple weeks off due to a personal injury I had one week and then a death in our family the next week. I thought it would be best to continue the swim lessons as my children are having such progress and they needed something to keep their mind off from the death in the family.

My daughter was excited to go as always and my son was a little hesitant. When we arrived, we changed our clothing and got into the showers to rinse off before entering in the pool. This time our lesson was at the right side of the center were the lap swimmers were. I was worried because that is the deep end and being a protective mother I was scared for them. I was assured in the thought that it was a private lesson and Leslie is always there with them. She told them to get the Padded Floater Bar (shown below)  from the racks that would help them keep afloat while learning to swim.

Before they got into the water, I told my son to make sure he didn’t stay on the ledge and I told my daughter to show her brother how it’s done. As they headed into the pool with Leslie, I headed to the parent viewing section on the 2nd floor.

Once my daughter saw that it was the deeper end, she quickly got scared and hesitant to get in. On the other hand, my son got in without a thought. This shocked me. Leslie spoke to my daughter and was able to comfort her into the pool. Leslie put some swim flippers on my son and told him to grab the floater bar and swim to the middle and back. He did it as if he had done it before.

I was so impressed with him. When they swam back to the side my daughter was sitting on the ledge waiting, they exchanged the feet flippers. My daughter was not as excited as my son.  It took her some more words from Leslie to get her on the floater bar and into the water. Once she started you could see the look of ,”Why was I scared?” My son was waiting on the ledge and was cheering her on as she swam. My daughter was totally concentrated and Leslie was right by her side encouraging her.  They went midway on the lane and then swam back.

lesson 4 c

Once Leslie and my daughter got back, my son was so excited to go next. So they alternated back and forth midway on the lane to get them used to being in the deep comfortably. They practicing the proper way to do leg movements and strokes. I was so proud of both of them.

When it was time to get out of the pool, my son asked if he could swim all the way to the other side. Leslie asked me if it was okay and if we had a little extra time as the pool is very long. I was so shocked that my son wanted to do it and of course I said okay. My daughter proceeded to get out of the pool and walk to the other side while I went downstairs to get them. By the time I got down a flight of stairs and my daughter walked to the other side of the pool, my son was done. I was so happy with his progress. But I was more excited as his willingness and comfort level to keep pushing himself (especially since he is only 5).

I spoke to my daughter and wanted to find out her thoughts. She said at first she was scared because she thought that when she got in she would fall to the bottom without floaties. She said but then Leslie told her she would be right there. My daughter also said that she looked around and saw all the lifeguards and other teachers so she felt better. Because my daughter is 2 years older than my son, I forget that she needs reassurance too before her lessons. So I reminded her that I would never let anything happen to her and I would never put her with a teacher I didn’t have confidence would take care of her. She smiled and said she can’t wait until the next lesson so she can do better than her brother. I chuckled as we went to the changing room.

I know that missing a couple lessons made my daughter leary for a little bit at first, but know that overall it was good for her to overcome her own timidness to new experiences. I was over-joyed with my son’s progress. I look forward to seeing how they do next week.

Swim Safely: Quick tips @allstarswimATL

Swimming is a great way for the whole family to get active. Follow these tips to stay safe in and around the water.

Swim safely.

  • Take swim lessons if you don’t know how to swim. Sign your kids up for lessons as soon as they are old enough.
  • Swim near a lifeguard and never swim alone.
  • Don’t drink alcohol if you are swimming or watching children.
  • Use floating toys like water wings and noodles for fun – not for safety. Don’t use them in place of life jackets.
  • Watch out for rip currents. A rip current is when the water pulls you away from shore. If you get caught in a rip current, swim along the shoreline until you are out of the current, then swim to shore.

Watch children carefully.

  • Make sure at least one adult is watching when children are in or around the water.
  • Don’t read or use the phone while you are watching young children.
  • Watch all children in the water, even if they know how to swim.
  • If you have a pool, install 4-sided fencing that’s at least 4 feet high and separates the pool from the house or yard. Use self-closing and self-latching gates that open outward and are out of reach of children.

Check water and weather conditions before going swimming.

  • Don’t swim in the ocean, lakes, or rivers after heavy rain. Water is more likely to be polluted after a rain storm.
  • Check for signs or warnings about bacteria or other pollution in the water.
  • Get out of the water right away if you hear thunder or see lightning. Strong winds can also be dangerous.

Protect yourself and others from germs in the water.

  • Try not to get water in your mouth.
  • Make sure everyone is clean before swimming. Shower with soap. Wash your hands after using the bathroom or changing diapers.
  • Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-changing area.

Protect your skin from the sun.

  • Wear plenty of sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15.
  • Put on more sunscreen every couple of hours and after swimming or sweating.

Lesson #3:

This past Saturday we had another lesson. This time we had another little boy in our lesson (name will be unnamed for privacy). He is 4 years old and was on his #2 lesson. I spoke to his mother as the children (my kids 7yrs  & 5yrs and the boy 4yrs) got into the water. She told me that he (like my son) was hesitant on being in the water. She also stated that she looked around to other locations and thought All Star Swimmers was the best fit because it was private lessons. Even with a class size, there are only a few children so it is still private and more one on one time. She also confirmed my thought that some children learn better from professionals than from “mommy”.

Leslie (our instructor) thought it would be a good idea to put the two boys together so they could see how my daughter is learning and so the boys could interact with each other to gain a secure connection with a “partner”. It was amazing to see how it worked.

At first the boys were shy, but that quickly passed as a couple mins later they were laughing and talking. Leslie spoke to them about water safety and water rules before they began.

First up was my daughter who grabbed on to the floater bar and moved her legs to swim holding on to this bar. While she was doing that, Leslie put the boys side by side and they tried to get themselves afloat with the learning bar. Leslie on one side and the boys across from her, she had each hand on each of the floater bars. My new “mommy friend” and I were amazed at how the boys quickly were moving their legs and actually trying to swim…not holding on to the ledge of the pool like they did their first lesson. They moved their way from one side of the pool to the other horizontal and then vertical.

Another Little boy came (slightly older) and showed all three children how to hold their breath under water with their goggles. The three children were still hesitant but did attempt. I get the feeling he was with All Star Swimmers at a different level and was showing them so that Leslie can watch the children while they tried it.

At the end of the lesson, my two kids got out of the poo but their new friend was having such a great time this time, he cried to stay in. That is an amazing sign to see the transformation from being uneasy to completely not wanting to get out.

I am proud of both my children for taking great steps but especially to my son who spent the lesson away from the ledge and actually attempting to swim. It speaks volume the way an instructor can learn how a certain child(ren) learns and then use a different technique to teach. Not all children learn the same and not all instructors understand that.

I am excited to see their progress next weekend and I will post the result. Take the journey with my children and I as they continue to be comfortable in the water and learn to swim.

For my daughter’s 5th birthday, she came to me and said she wanted a “swim party”. I was very shocked as she didn’t like the water or anything to do with it. Living in Georgia, there aren’t many opportunities for us to go to beaches and public pools seemed un-hygienic. I decided to buy a home above ground pool. The party was a success and kids loved the pool. As I looked through the pictures, I noticed my daughter sat on the stairs of the pool happily playing with her friends while they were in the pool.

Over the last couple years, I have tried to take my daughter and son to beaches and pools. My daughter is 7 now and she is able to walk about pools on the 3ft side but doesn’t swim. My son is now 5 years old and clings to me like my daughter once did. I have tried to ease them and show them how to swim. However, the same reason I do not write prescriptions and I do not fix my own electrical problems, I am not a professional. I needed to get a swim instructor.

After, looking into the YMCA and several swim schools, I decided that group swim classes was not for me. Watching other children sit on the side of the pool while the instructor spends 5 mins with each child in the water didn’t seem like that was a good fit for me or like it was safe. I wanted my children to have individual time with the instructor.

I found All Star Swimmers of Atlanta and after looking at their website and speaking with their instructor, Leslie, I was put at ease. I explained to Leslie that my daughter will do a lot better at instruction then my son who doesn’t even like the idea of getting in the water. We decided they should both be taught at the same time so that my daughter can lead my son and they can learn together.

SWIM LESSON #1:

My daughter was very excited while my son was apprehensive about taking classes. The first lesson was “Water Safety”. As I sat back and watched, I tried to take a couple pictures but it is prohibited for the privacy of others. I managed to sneak a couple. Leslie taught them about different ways to be safe in the water, holding your breath under water and what to do and not do. The part on holding their breath under water made them both uncomfortable. My daughter was fine with moving about the water but my son clung to the side of the pool most of the time. After class, Leslie told me different ways to make them comfortable at home with putting their head under water; one of which was in the bath tub with their goggles. I asked the kids in the car what they thought. My daughter said she loved it and my son said, “It wasn’t bad.” Which for him was great. lol

SWIM LESSON #2:

Both kids this time were excited about going to swim class. I could see that my son was concentrating of what Leslie was telling him. My daughter really tried to focus on moving her legs while holding on to the safety pole. My son this time was better about getting away from the side. Instead, Leslie had them hold the side and kick their legs. My son was fine with that. They all moved to the other side of the pool to get them comfortable with different surroundings. At that point I could not take pictures, but it worked. My son was able to let go of the side and follow instruction. After class, my son came up to me and said, ” I was listening and it worked. I let go.” He was excited to make progress. I was excited for him.
